2024 Indiana Logger of the Year

By Ken Day

Loggers Inc. of Clay City Indiana is the 2024 Indiana Logger of the Year.  Bill and Kyle Booe are the owners and operate both a logging crew and sawmill.  The award was announced at the Tree Farm Breakfast at the Indiana Hardwood Lumberman’s Association convention in Indianapolis in March.  They were selected for professionalization, sensitivity of soils and water, and relationships with consulting foresters, landowners, and other sawmills.

Loggers Inc. logs about 4 million board feet and saws 6 to 8 million board feet annually.  They participate in Best Management Practices, CPR, logger, and safety training to improve the operation.  The logging continues to function as a hand felling operation.  They utilize low ground pressure equipment, both rubber tired and tracked machines, to minimize soil disturbance.

In 2024 they hosted a field day of a harvest site with consulting foresters in Owen County.  They provide educational programs hosting Boy Scouts and Future Farmers of America members.  This opportunity provides information about logging operations, forest management, natural resources, and soil and water resources.  The Logger of the Year award is sponsored by the Indiana Tree Farm Committee.  The Committee consists of 30 members representing a cross section of forestry professionals in Indiana.

Ken Day is retired Forest Supervisor of the Hoosier National Forest.
